Celebrate Older Americans this May!

via The Administration for Community Living (ACL)

Did you know May is Older Americans Month? Thanks to a Facebook post from the Janet Goeske Foundation we do now! The ACL’s website says this month is a, ”  proud tradition that shows our commitment to honoring the value that elders contribute to our communities. Show your support for Older Americans Month by unleashing the power of age in your community.”

The campaign includes a wonderful Pinterest page that shares the stories of older Americans doing extraordinary things, including athletic and fitness feats. Under a picture of an older woman in a yoga pose a caption reads, ” Tao Porchon-Lynch is 93 years old, a yoga teacher, and dances Tango and Samba whenever she gets the chance! She says “I don’t believe in age. I believe in the power of energy.” The page is full inspirational stories and quotes just like this one, which just goes to show that it doesn’t matter how old you are — there is still time to get moving and get healthy!

We encourage everyone to check out the page — it is truly inspirational!

“Unleash the Power of Age!

For 50 years, May has been the month we celebrate older adults across the nation. You could say that this year, Older Americans Month is coming of age.

There is no age limit on achievement—and older Americans are doing incredible things. They make a difference in their communities by continuing their careers, pursuing new business ventures, and volunteering in their retirement years.

It is an honor to highlight people who improve their communities in countless ways, all year round. These 60-plus-year-olds have been nominated for recognition of their efforts in the “Unleash the Power of Age in Your Community Challenge.”

Starting May 20th, you can visit Challenge.gov to vote for your favorite nominees. Three honorees will be chosen from the many who were nominated. All are winners.

Throughout the year, the Administration on Aging—and its national aging services network—advances the independence and well-being of older adults.

You can help Unleash the Power of Age! by joining in the celebration of Older Americans Month. Consider the following ideas:

Whether you’re planning a community-wide event or telling someone that you appreciate them, you can join the celebration!
